Connecting Youth To The Outdoors

Jesus Dolores, Education

YLP Intern

My name is Jesus Dolores, I am originally from Mexico but my family and I moved to the United States when I was 12 years old. My family and I now live in Madera California. I am currently enrolled at the University of California Merced and my major is Mechanical Engineering. During the summer of 2011 I was given the opportunity to live and work as an intern in Yosemite National Park for twelve weeks. The Yosemite Leadership Program Internship allowed me to work for the National Park Interpretation; Education Branch. In the Education Branch I developed, learned, explored and gained professional skills in environmental education. I was guided by experienced park rangers through the process of researching, developing, and delivering environmental educational programs for visiting groups, and partnerships within Yosemite National Park. Overall, this internship has helped me to become a better person. I gained leadership skill, I learned about wilderness, and also learned about protecting the National Parks. This internship gave me the tool to help my community and make a difference. I am now working in the UC Merced Wilderness Education Center and also leading trips to Yosemite National Park. I am motivated to help students and encourage them to experience what I have experience. Yosemite has become a place that I love and that I will always remember, thanks to the Yosemite Leadership Program Internship.
